MORETON BAY CLASSIC

41st ANNIVERSARY REGATTA 2008.

The aussie boat loans Moreton Bay Classic started in surprising good weather considering the near record falls of rain just recently, something to thank the Gods for! The rain was gone but so was the wind. Discussions about relocating the start to Coffee Pots faded with the wind increasing just on cue from nothing at 9am to around 8 knots at the 11am start (even if it was from the N – NNE).

41 boats lined up for the start and enjoyed a steadily increasing breeze which got up to around 20 knots by the end of the race. Jenny Kay, on the other hand broke their tiller and headed back to manly where sponsor Muirs Manly Marine assisted in fashioning an emergency tiller. Pretty rough for their first race ever! (Steve there are always stories like that about first trips).

A fair bit of working to get up to North Point but everyone made it to the party at Scarborough. Once again the staff at Moreton Bay Boat Club were on hand to help with berthing and the festivities began with a Bundy rum or 3 consumed.

We had to leave fairly early in order to try to beat the faster boats to the finish, especially with the times Boss Racing were coming in with! Leaving about 6:30 we found a totally different wind out on the bay away from the protection of the headland! It was already gusting around 25 knots and the waves were stopping Infinity dead in her tracks at times only managing 0.6 knot! We headed back to the Harbour and words like “calling it off!” were bandied around before the decision was made to continue as there wasn’t a Strong Wind Warning for the bay (just outside) and we would hitch a ride with Too Impetuous as She was the only one fast enough to get down to the finish line before MOST of the boats anyway.

Bashing our way into it we were glad we had the girls drive to Manly as green water was coming over the bow, a beautiful loose reach from the reds north of St Helena Island was much more pleasant, and faster, than motoring.

Unfortunately 8 boats did not start on Sunday, testimony to the conditions we were encountering, and 6 were either late for the cutoff or had other problems like Jenny Kay (something about first trips heh?)

Steve made it to Otter Rock only to have to limp back to Scarborough with the jury rigged tiller taking a battering. The staff at Moreton Bay Boat helping him to fashion some repairs and get her back in the water, albeit too late to finish on time.

 Some comments from entrants:

Hi Linsay,

We didn’t pull out yesterday we actually arrived back a few minutes behind Toucan, but obviously too late for a finish.  Yes we broke our tiller 30 minutes prior to Saturday’s start and managed with the help from the guys at Muir’s to make a temporary repair which we nursed through the day until we hit the bigger swells and higher winds just after the Otter Rock rounding where it all came apart and we had to pull out and motor back to Scarborough.  Once again the very helpful guys at MBBC helped out with some timber and tools so we could manufacture a new “rustic” tiller which performed beautifully for us in Sunday’s race back to Manly except we lost time early in the race which made us late across the finish.

On behalf of myself and crew please accept our thanks for a great weekend and a fantastically organised event (our first race).  We look forward to good things in the future and hopefully a result next time we sail with you.

 Cheers

Steve (Jenny Kay)

 Hi Linsay

I would like to also take this opportunity to thank yourself and the TSCQ persons for a very enjoyable weekend. TSCQ have a tight well organized management team.

I was looking forward to this regatta for quite a while. We had some great racing and a fine time at Scarborough.

 Thanks from Team Bavarian Flyer

Hi Linsay and TSCQ,

Congratulations on another fantastic Moreton Bay Classic. Please convey my appreciation on behalf of the Multihull fleet. We are always made to feel welcome, the event is well organised, the sponsor bag and trophies are superb, the courses are great, and the only downside is going back to work on Monday!

With the possible stronger winds on Sunday, the skipper meeting on Sunday morning was informative, and helped to remind owners of their obligations. Fortunately the weather prediction of fading wind was correct, and my daughters reported that two days of going upwind has never been so much fun. On Intrigue we ended the weekend with some upwind respite and a divine steady 15 knot screecher ride from the St Helena Reds all the way to the finish, with the main hull slapping the water occasionally.

 Sincere Thanks,

Peter Hackett

Lindsay,

Agree with Peter. Great event and well organised. Congratulations to your and your club on all aspects.

regards

Hi Linsay

Congratulations on your organising of this event. I'm happy to provide feedback via the email address on the website.

Thanks too for the attached results. Just one thing - Le Rossignol is a Mk II Ross 780, not a Mk III (or a highly modified Mk III!!!!)[said in jest]

The Free family enjoyed themselves thoroughly though I think Lindy-Jo, the twins Alexandra and Bridget (7) and their brother Nicholas (9) have had enough windward work for quite some time. Surprisingly, they said they enjoyed Sunday better than Saturday!

Cheers and best wishes

Murray

Hi Linsay

Thanks for a great weekend. We are going to actively promote it next year amongst the other sports boat owners and see if we can get a few more. All the boats from this year have said they will be back.

Everyone was so welcoming even when we had trouble berthing at Scarborough there were happy to let us move to a better spot. (the joys of having wings) Hope it wasn’t too much off an inconvenience for any off the other boats.

We stayed pretty late on Sat night and had a good chance to talk to a lot off the members off your club. They were great and really happy to have us there, which I wasn’t sure if they would be. I don’t think I have answered so many questions about my boat before. It was fun

The prizes were absolutely awesome. I can’t believe how much stuff we won. You have some fantastic sponsors

We will see you again next year.

 Regards

Dear Linsay

Just wanted to reiterate the comments from my fellow multihullers....thanks for your’s and the clubs efforts. It was the first time we competed and found it to be thoroughly enjoyable and very well run. We will be back next year. Thanks to the mark boats and the gate is a great idea also.

The family division is a great initiative and one of the main reasons we entered. The kids were keen on the whole family division thing and we think it is a great idea and should happen more often. It was a great weekend all round and we are very happy with the Div 4 result!

See you next time and thanks again!

Cheers
