The number of available berths at MBBC is limited due to the recently announced closure of the adjacent commercial Compass Marina.

All entries received from now on will be conditional on the availability of berthing which will be finalised with MBBC early next week.

All boats will be required to raft up to make best use of the available space.

Private berthing may be available at cost at the nearby Scarborough Marina but this is the entrant’s responsibility.

The Moreton Bay Classic is the annual invitation event run by the TSCQ. It is a weekend event from Manly to Scarborough and return. The overall winner will receive the Nev Schaffer Memorial Trophy.

The event is open to trailerable monohulls, both trailer sailers and sports boats. Non TSCQ members are welcome to enter. There is no entry fee and TSCQ will arrange free berthing at the MBBC marina for the Saturday night. On-line entry is essential to ensure sufficient berths are arranged. All MBBC facilities will be available to all competitors. Food and drinks can be purchased at MBBC for both dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

This year, rather than using start and finish boats, we will use a staggered start system with boats starting at nominated times and recording their own finish time. Trophies will be presented at the club’s presentation night in November.

This trophy honours a much-loved former club member who enjoyed sailing to the Sand Hills. This year’s event is on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, with the combined times for the two days used to decide the winner of the trophy. The Saturday race is from Manly to the Big Sand Hills on Moreton Island, with staggered start times commencing from 10:40 am at the Manly leads. Race briefing will be in the carpark near the public boat ramp at about 9:30 am. Please download the course map from the Documents page on the club web site. Any boats wishing to cruise over should consider starting before 10:30 am, but they can sail over in their own time.

High tide on Saturday is at 7:20 pm (1.77 m) and the high tide on Sunday morning is at 7:58 am (1.80 m) which is slightly higher than the evening high tide. There will be an informal briefing after breakfast for those racing home, possibly with an early race start depending on the wind forecast. Cruisers can return at their leisure.

There are no facilities at the Sand Hills, just a lovely beach and the giant sand dunes. Be prepared to use the toilet on your boat or to go bush with a small shovel. You should bring some drinks and nibbles for the usual get together on the beach. Folding chairs or a rug are optional. You can cook and eat on your boat, or on the beach. It is possible to camp behind the beach in a small tent if you wish. Hope to see lots of boats out for this popular weekender and to remember Susie.

The next club race is the Geoff Wallace Memorial Trophy race at Wivenhoe Dam on Sunday 27 October, with a start at about 11 am from the Logan Complex boat ramp. The race remembers Geoff (Marty’s dad) who was a past President, and a very active member from 1969 to 1992. For Geoff, the TSCQ was about having fun and enjoying companionship as much (or more than) winning races. Some boats will also be going for a cruise on Saturday afternoon.

If you plan on camping in a tent for the weekend, sites 45-56 at Captain Logan Camp Ground are recommended. Marty has booked site 57 and Dave has booked site 46. The sites are level, unpowered and overlook the inlet where we tie up our boats. The amenities block is nearby. If the weather is kind it should be a great weekend, both at the camp and on the water. The dam is currently at 51% which is a little lower than for the last few years, but there is still plenty of water at the ramp and for sailing. BYO food, drinks, firewood and camping gear. There is a Seniors Card discount so mention it when you make your booking if you have one. Any trailer sailer is welcome to join us for the weekend. This annual event will be held at MBTBC at Manly on Saturday 27 July from 6:30 pm. The meeting will be brief, but it is important as we need to elect a new committee to keep the club going for another year. Most of the outgoing committee are available for re-election, but some would be happy to stand down and new blood is always welcome. Please consider helping in one of the many roles available. The duties are not onerous and there is plenty of experience available if needed. But most importantly, come along and show your support for the club and enjoy a great night out with good company. Our first social event for the year will be the traditional ladies’ night dinner to thank our sailing and non-sailing partners for their support and tolerance of our on-water activities. 2018 has been a busy and successful year for the TSCQ, and your committee has been working hard to make 2019 even better. We have scheduled a full program of club races to complement the MCC races, and they will all count towards the club championship, with your best ten results deciding your score. The updated Sailing Instructions explain the scoring and handicapping systems that will be used next year. Several cruises are also planned for those who are not so competitive.

Our first club race and cruise is in January from Sandgate, and the Moreton Bay Classic is in early March. Please check the club web site for upcoming events and use the on-line calendar to keep up to date with the program and any changes. The printed club calendar will be available in the new year. Keep an eye on the Facebook page as some members plan to do some cruising over the holiday period, and we would love you to join us. Refer to the MCC web site for details of their program.
